CANADA’S NATIONAL WOMEN’S TEAM TO HOST TRAINING CAMP IN FREDERICTON, N.B.

28-player centralization roster to train in Fredericton May 26-June 12

CALGARY, Alta. – Canada’s National Women’s Team is travelling east for its upcoming training camp that will be hosted in Fredericton, N.B., from May 26-June 12, 2017.

For the 28 players recently named to Canada’s Olympic centralization roster, the camp will focus on off-ice training, which includes dryland training, fitness-testing, and physical and mental preparation.

“Hosting the National Women’s Team’s first centralization camp in Fredericton is a great honour for Hockey New Brunswick,” said executive director Nic Jansen. “The camp will be a great opportunity to see the top female players in the country as they prepare to represent Team Canada at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in South Korea.”

Aspiring female players at the Novice, Atom and Peewee levels will have the opportunity to interact with Team Canada on-ice June 7 at a community event hosted by Hockey New Brunswick. Further details and a registration link for the event will be provided by Hockey New Brunswick in the coming days.

“We are very proud and excited to have Canada’s National Women’s Team in Fredericton. This is truly an exceptional opportunity to showcase the talent of Canadian women's hockey to minor female hockey players in the region who aspire to wear the Hockey Canada logo on their jersey,” said Fredericton Tourism sport tourism coordinator, Bobby Despres. “We know the community will welcome the athletes and support staff with open arms, and know that they will enjoy the beauty and hospitality of our great city.”

Canada’s centralization roster includes three goaltenders, nine defenceman, and 16 forwards, and features 14 players who won gold at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia. It also includes 21 players who captured silver at the 2017 IIHF Women’s World Championship in Plymouth, Mich.

“This camp is an important part of our preparation for the 2018 Olympic Winter Games and our players and staff are looking forward to training in Fredericton and connecting with the community,” said Melody Davidson, Hockey Canada’s general manager of national women’s team programs. “We’d like to thank everyone who has worked diligently to accommodate us, including Ken Bagnell and his team at CSI Atlantic who will play a big role in the success of our camp.”

The players and staff will come together in Calgary this August on a full-time basis with Hockey Canada, based out of the Markin MacPhail Centre at WinSport’s Canada Olympic Park. As part of the preparation for the 2018 Olympic Winter Games, the 2017-18 season will be highlighted by the 2017 4 Nations Cup and other games that will be announced at a later date.
